The American Western: From Owen Wister to Johnny Depp

The American Western is arguably the most influential story form of the 20th century, a genre whose literature and film have shaped not only a nation’s, but half a world’s cultural and moral perceptions. One of the main strengths of the Western is its ability to respond to the relevant obsessions and fears of its audience. For more than a century, the unique American genre has been able to continually transform itself to fit changing cultural patterns and yet still remain recognizable. In the course we will examine the Western, as both literature and film, and focus mainly on the West as myth, as a narrative space in which writers and directors have inscribed their visions. The Western’s obsession with masculinity in its various manifestations will be of special interest. We will begin with some texts that precede the genre (Frederick Jackson Turner, James Fenimore Cooper, etc) and then turn to the acknowledged first embodiment of the Western (Wister’s THE VIRGINIAN) and some of its countless imitators. The course will progress chronologically and cover the genre’s essential works—from the heyday of the 1950s, over the anti-Western, the brief comeback in the 1980s, to today. Students will be expected to give brief presentations and to participate in class discussions.

Læs artiklen fra "Kontant" her.
